Rotate a PDF 90 degrees

This rotates the classic sideways scan, where the page was fed landscape into a portrait scanner. The important part: the rotation is written into the document, so it survives emailing, printing and opening in a different app.

Why a rotation that "sticks" is different

Viewers let you rotate a page on screen without changing the file. The moment you send it, the recipient sees the original orientation again. Writing the rotation into the page dictionary — what this tool does — fixes it for everyone, in every application.

The operation touches only the rotation entry, not the page content. No image is re-encoded, so there is no quality loss and the file size barely changes.

Rotating only some pages

Mixed documents are common: a landscape chart inside a portrait report, or one upside-down page in a 60-page scan. Enter specific pages — 1, 4-6 — and only those are changed. Leave the field as "all" to rotate the whole document.

Rotations are cumulative. Applying 90° to a page that is already rotated 90° produces 180°, which is usually what people want after a second attempt goes wrong.

A note on scanning settings

If you are re-scanning anyway, set the document orientation at the scanner. It is faster than fixing it afterwards, and it avoids the double-rotation mistake that leaves pages 180° off.

Questions

Is the rotation permanent?

Yes. It is written into the PDF, so it applies in Acrobat, Preview, Chrome, and on mobile.

Does rotating damage quality?

No. Only the rotation value changes; page content is untouched.

Can I rotate just one page?

Yes — enter that page number instead of "all".
