Convert a PDF to Word for free

Free PDF-to-Word tools usually want an email address, then return HTML renamed as .docx. This one produces a real Word file, and it is honest about what a PDF makes impossible.

What “conversion” actually means

A PDF has no paragraphs. It stores glyphs at coordinates. Every converter is rebuilding structure that was discarded when the file was created, which is why two converters produce very different results from the same input.

The good ones cluster glyphs into lines by baseline, join lines into paragraphs using the horizontal gaps, and detect headings from font size. The bad ones emit one text box per line, which looks right in a screenshot and is uneditable in practice.

The step that saves the most manual work

Repeated headers and footers. A 40-page report with a running title and a page number produces 80 junk lines when converted naively — one in the middle of every paragraph. This converter counts how often each edge line appears and drops the ones that repeat on most pages.

That single filter is usually the difference between a document you can edit and one you have to clean by hand.

What you will still have to fix

Tables arrive as linear paragraphs, multi-column layouts interleave, and images are not extracted. Those are real limits, not bugs — a PDF has no table model and no column model to recover.

If the original was a scan, there is no text layer at all. Run OCR first, or ask the sender for the source file: it is always better than any conversion.

Questions

Is it really free?

Yes — three conversions a day on the free plan, no account, no watermark, no email. Pro removes the daily counter.

Will the formatting match exactly?

No, and no tool can promise that. You get the text, paragraph breaks and a rough heading structure.

Why are my images missing?

Only text is reconstructed. A Word file with floating images at approximate positions is usually worse than clean text you can lay out yourself.
